Painful Lumps

Abscesses

An abscess is a collection of pus that forms due to infection. It can occur anywhere in the body, including the digestive system. This guide focusses on more common abscesses that occur on the superficial areas.

Common Types of Abscesses

Perianal Abscesses

As mentioned earlier, these are abscesses located near the anus or rectum.

Cutaneous Abscesses

Painful swellings on the skin include infective conditions like abscesses, carbuncles or furuncles. One of the more common abscess forms as a result of inadvertent entry of bacteria into an existing swelling like a sebaceous cyst. Furuncles and carbuncles form as a result of bacteria entering through the skin, and are sometime more common in diabetics.

Symptoms of Abscesses

  • Localised pain and swelling
  • Redness and warmth over the affected area
  • Fever and chills
  • Drainage of pus from the abscess

Diagnosis of Abscesses

Diagnosis often involves:
  • Physical Examination – Checking for signs of swelling, redness, and tenderness.
  • Imaging – Ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI to locate and assess the abscess.
  • Blood Tests – To identify signs of infection.

Treatment Options for Abscesses

  • Antibiotics – To treat the underlying infection.
  • Drainage – Surgical or needle drainage to remove pus.
  • Pain Management – Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers.
