Surgery

GERD is a condition that occurs when the reflux of stomach contents, including gastric acid, causes troublesome symptoms. This happens when lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), does not function properly, allowing gastric acid to flow back up into the oesophagus.

Oesophageal surgery is a complex and challenging procedure that requires experienced surgeons. Oesophagectomy is typically performed to treat oesophageal cancer or a severely damaged oesophagus, often resulting from corrosive ingestion.

Not all lumps and bumps need treatment or surgical removal. Medical treatment with
oral medications or creams can help. Surgery is reserved for lumps and bumps that are troublesome, worrisome or not responding to medical treatment.

There are various treatment options for colon cancer that are not limited to just
surgery.

Gastrectomy for gastric cancer via an open abdominal approach has been performed since the 1920s. Laparoscopic gastrectomy was first described in Japan in 1994 and the procedure is safe, feasible, and oncologically sound when performed by experienced surgeons.

Bariatric surgery is surgery that is performed with the intenon of inducing weight loss. These operaons have been found to have significant benefits for paents suffering from chronic metabolic condions like diabetes mellitus, providing even
remissions in certain instances, which seem to be independent of weight loss.

Laparoscopic surgery is the choice for GIST resecons whenever possible as it gives a faster recovery. In larger GIST tumours, we would recommend a course of pre-surgery treatment to shrink the tumour.

Surgery is the standard in the treatment of gallstones. The gallbladder is removed in
an operation through keyhole surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy).

Surgery is performed under general or regional anaesthesia, and a same-day discharge is normally expected. There are a few surgical options available, the choice of which
will depend on your circumstances and choice, after knowing the
advantages and relative limitations of each method.

Hernia repair involves first reducing the hernia and the subsequent reinforcement closure of the defect in the abdominal wall. While defects used to be closed with
sutures in older techniques, the current standard of repair now is recognised to be a tension-free repair with a mesh.
